Grandmother gives birth to grandson

A grandmother gave birth to her grandson last week in an incredible story of love and sacrifice.

Kristine Casey acted as surrogate for her daughter, who was unable to conceive a child with her husband. Casey, who is in her 60s and past menopause, received hormones to keep her uterus acting young enough to house the baby, which was created using her daughter’s egg and son-in-law’s sperm.

It’s a pretty incredible story, but I’m sure it’s also one that makes some people feel uncomfortable. Surrogacy is a gray area ethically, emotionally and legally. Any story about one person’s bun in someone else’s oven can cause mixed reactions.

I’m sure there are loads of moral, religious and psychological considerations involved with a scenario like this one, but I suspended those criticisms when I read this story. I was simply overcome with the love in this family that made it possible for this little baby to be here today.

A mother was able to give her daughter the one thing she wanted most and couldn’t provide for herself – a baby. She gave her daughter the chance to be a mother. I think it’s the ultimate gift a mother could give to her daughter.

What do you think of this story? Is this something you would do for your children?
