Homosexual teens are eight times more likely to attempt suicide and three times more at risk for drug use if their parents respond negatively to their sexual orientation, a new study has found.
As a parent, I can only imagine how hard it would be if your child’s sexual choice conflicted with your own moral or religious views. It would be hard to stay calm and open-minded if your child came out of the closet and you wanted to push them back in.
But the study by researchers at San Francisco State University revealed that when parents respond negatively about homosexuality, teens can spiral into depression, drug use and even taking their own life.
The research even showed that being forbidden from associating with gay peers was as damaging as being physically beaten or verbally abused.
Parents who just take baby steps to respond with composure instead of rejection can dramatically improve a gay youth’s mental health outlook, the study continues.
What would you do in this situation? Is tough love the answer or is it best just to accept your child and find a way to make peace within yourself?
