Design your fetus!
I clicked on a story on CNN last week titled “Designer Babies,” expecting a story on Hollywood celebs and their spoiled children.
Instead, the article was about how new technology could feasibly be used to test cosmetic genes on babies before they are even born. That means moms-to-be could find out if their baby is going to be fat or thin, athletic or bookish. Mom could even decide which she’d prefer and manipulate the genes to get her very own custom-designed baby.
I’m sorry . . . what?
Researchers say the technology is not used for that purpose now and is only used to diagnose genetic problems such as heart disease, cancer or diabetes. The baby could then possibly be cured in the womb or aborted.
Wow, so much for letting nature, evolution or God take its course.
I’m all for fertility treatments to help couples get pregnant, but I’m not comfortable with this new level of tampering with the natural process of baby making. You can already choose the sex of your child via in-vitro, and now it seems like picking their eye color isn’t too far off.
All this high-tech baby making makes me wonder if just because we have the technology, should we use it? What do you think — at one point have we crossed the line from medical treatments to just plain playing God?
