Learning to Talk
My daughter is learning to talk, which means she’s making silly noises and my husband and I are interpreting them as words and declaring our child a genius.
Usually, the conversation goes something like this:
Me: Oh, you have to hear Nicole say goodnight. She just started saying it. OK, Nicole, say goodnight.
Nicole: (Stares at me like she’s never seen me before in her life)
Me: No, seriously she can really do it. Nicole, say goodnight.
Nicole: laflufenbaah
Me: I swear she can do it. She does it all the time. Goooodniiight, come on honey.
Nicole: galaflufenbaah
Me: Ha! See I told you she can say it. Isn’t that amazing?
This conversation usually ends with a courtesy smile and nod from whomever I am harassing, and me beaming with pride at my incredibly advanced daughter.
What can I say — I’m a proud momma.
Seriously though, Nicole is saying some words that even non-relatives can understand — I swear! In particular, she’s fond of the word no. Well, actually, she’s fond of the word “Mo,” but trust me, the meaning is there when she points her little finger at me when I come at her with broccoli.
What were your children’s first words?
