Guns and kids: Can they coexist?

While reading a safety manual at my doctor’s office the other day, I ran across a short article on kids and gun safety. The article said the only guaranteed way to prevent at-home shooting accidents is to never have guns and kids in the same home. If you absolutely MUST have a gun because of your profession, the article said, then it needs to be locked in one case with the ammunition locked in another case in a separate location.

It seems a little harsh to say there’s no truly safe way to have a gun in the home. I know many responsible parents who have guns in the home, teach their children about gun safety and take safety precautions.

What do you think — how can you safely keep a gun in the home when there are kids around? Or can guns and kids not safely coexist in the same house?
